This unusual hand-carved antique wooden folk-art piece was made by the ANRI Company of Italy.

It's in very good age-appropriate condition.

It features a carved man in a top hat and tails, bent over at the waist and leaning on the top of a wooden barrel.

Likely dates from the early 1900s. It's obvious that it was made by a craftsman from an entirely different era; it's clearly not a modern-day piece. Very much like stepping back in history and holding something from a distant past that no longer exists.

When his tails are pushed downward, he stands up straight by way of a hinge pin, which then opens up the top third of the barrel.

The barrel would likely have held cigarettes, wooden matches, or toothpicks (note modern toothpicks in first photo).

Other smallish items no longer than 3" could certainly fit inside of the hollowed-out barrel, too. The barrel top attached to his hands is concave inside, not flat across.

The figure is intricately carved, showing great detail in his face, fingers, and the folds of his clothing. His head swivels 360° on an internal spring, and he has a carved cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth.

He looks like a happy drunk--truth be told--which may well be why he's leaning heavily on a barrel. His reddened cheeks, nose and chin tend to bear that out.

There is a prominent bung in the front of the barrel, just as there would be in real life.

Everything is completely original and functions properly; no breaks, no cracks, no repairs.

This comes from a non-pet, non-smoking home. I inherited it from my brother, who was a professional woodworker and excellent carver.

Approximate dimensions:
6.5" tall, from base to the top of his top hat
6.5" long, from the bung to the tip of his tails
2.75" wide at center of the barrel

This would make a really unusual, special gift for someone who appreciates both fine wood carving, and curios from the past.
