This is a super rare Martin guitar which is not only strikingly beautiful to the eyes and ears, but a piece of history. The Martin D-62LE (Limited Edition) was a custom-built ‘Guitar of the Month’ in October 1986, and it was Martin's first ever Dreadnought model using maple for the back and sides. There were only 48 made, and there are only 48 in existence to this day. This is one of them.
The condition of this guitar is absolutely immaculate. I’m calling it ‘mint’ and could probably pass as “like new” if it weren’t for microscopic superficial scratches/marks in a few spots. I took very close and detailed pictures of this guitar to show the condition as accurately as possible. Every piece of hardware is shiny and polished, and the frets are in outstanding condition. Not only is it aesthetically nearly flawless, it also plays and sounds better than any guitar I’ve come across.
The guitar has recently been setup with 12s. The neck has proper relief, and the intonation is great- it plays properly in tune up and down the neck. This guitar has been kept in a humidity controlled, smoke-free room with string tension off when not in use for it’s entire life. There are no cracks, no finish checking, no “bellying,” and absolutely no need for a neck reset (rare for a guitar this age). The action is around 2.25mm bass side, and as you can see in the pictures there is plenty of room on the saddle to adjust the action lower to your liking in the future. The frets have pretty much zero wear.

It comes with its original Martin hardshell case, which is in like-new condition with no damage/wear in the interior. This case alone is very valuable since it is a very specific and uncommon Martin stock case. Originally both C.F. Martin III and C.F. Martin IV were supposed to sign the D-62 LE guitars, but C.F. Martin III passed away in 1986. So they were produced in memory of C.F. Martin III and signed by C.F. Martin IV as indicated on the label.
This is a one-of-a-kind guitar that can be appreciated by both players and collectors. It has all the fullness and low end power of your favorite D-28 style Martins, with this unbelievable sparkle character from the maple. You have to play it to believe it.
You’ll find sold listings of used one’s from $3,500-$5,200 depending on condition and year sold. However, as is common with limited edition items, there is a large range and the prices are always increasing. I have no doubt that this guitar will be worth a fortune one day. Not sure there’s a more playable and pristine example out there than this one, so I feel it is well worth the asking price.
